Assata Shakur is a member of the Black Panther Party and Black Libeation Army who has been living in Cuba in political exile since 1984 after being broken out of prison. Like many Panthers and Political Prisoners, she was jailed for her involvement in the fight for the independence and self-determination of Afrikan people in the United States and many of her comrades remain in prison to this day.
